Original painting "St. Patriarchate of Tsarevgrad Tarnov"

In the spring of 1393, the son of Sultan Bayezid, Celebi, besieged Tarnovo with a large and strong army. After a three-month siege, on July 17, 1393, the city was captured. The population was severely punished. The city commandant, appointed by Celebi, killed 110 prominent citizens and boyars of Turnov in a church.

Patriarch Euthymius, the last Patriarch of Turnov, was sent into exile. From that time the Patriarchate of Tarnovo ceased to exist. The Bulgarian Church within the Patriarchate lost its independence.
